Ericeira 2024
Ericeira was my last trip from 2024. Just before the busy months of November and December, I wanted to do one last trip. a peaceful getaway to a small surfing town. very different than what i’m used to, but exactly what I needed
A different way of life
surfing culture is something that interests me enormously. it seems like these people have disconnected from normal society somewhat, in the best way possible
It’s the first time that I’ve gone surfing in about 10 years. I was taught to surf on the Belgian coast, which isn’t the best place to do so. The waves are small and only get bigger when it’s storming. Ericeira however is much different. Surfing is part of life here, and it shows. Surfers seem to have an inherent peace and happiness surrounding them. if the weather’s good and the swell is going, nothing can go wrong. everywhere you go, you see people in their element. happy faces, content faces and generally a good vibe. You see people haveing a long look over the ocean and people having the time of their lives surfing together, laughs and stories are shared. What a difference from the outside world.
The Ocean
The ocean is a magical place, scary as hell to some, the best place to come to peace for others, I’m one of the latter
Having lived by the ocean for almost all my life, I feel like I have a connection to it. though when I arrived in Ericeira, this connection got a whole new meaning. the endless sight of blue and the subtle whooshing sounds of waves breaking brought me in another state of mind. Seeing people chill by the beach, others trying to tame the ocean by catching its waves, it does something to a man.
Alma Do Paço
Staying at Alma do Paço was a delight. the beautiful b&b a gorgeous walk away from the beach in the hills of Ericeira made my experience here priceless
I was lucky enough to be able to stay at some friends’ business here. Jelle and Justin taught me how to surf way back when. They then bought Casa Paço D’Ilhas and Alma do Paço . Two neighbouring B&B’s that are beautiful. not only the look and feel of these places, but the people working it are amazing. the most hospitable and kind people you will ever meet. Even though I was all alone in Alma, I was greeted with a beautiful breakfast everyday and whenever I had a question or needed anything, they were there to help me out. Thank you everyone at Casa Paço D’Ilhas & Alma do Paço.
